Modals 語態助動詞 (by AK Lee)
Modals.jpg Our goal is to e able to define “modal” and related words. In my class, I will teach you how to explain words like may/might, can/could, will/would, shall/should, must and so on. Please be noted that the past terms of those words could have multiple meanings and functions.
 我們應學會定義甚麼是語態助動詞 及其這相關的詞彙。我的課會教你如何解釋 may/might, can/could, shall/should, will/would, must…等字及其使用時機。請注意: 這些字的過式是有很多不同的意義及功能。
以下就是一些我上課的內容大綱 below is the content to discuss in my classes...
能力  can (現在)  = be able to                   could (過去)  =  was/were able to
允許  can----You can go now                         may----You may go now
可能  may (可能性高) ----He may go to the party tonight.
might (可能性低)----He might go to the party tonight.
may have+ PP---過去可能作了甚麼 (可能性)
might have +PP---過去可能作了甚麼 (可能性) I might have eaten the bad food.
必定  must (表推測)----You must be broke now.                             must have + PP----過去一定作過….He must have been drinking.
祝福  may---May you have a happy Birthday!
寧可would rather----I would rather stay at home than go to the concert.
咨詢  would you mind (非常客氣的問) Would you mind telling me your stories?
以下態度由最弱 (1) 到最強 (4)
(1) 請求          can (較直接)/ could  (較客氣)/ will(較直接)/ would (較客氣)/may (非常禮貌的)
(2) 建議          could----we could go hiking if you want.               had better (強烈的建議)----We’d better hurry.
(3) 應該          should----You should not go to the party              should have + PP----過去該作而沒作 I should have bought the painting.
(4) 必須          have to/ must (更強)/ must not----不准
